The town of Newington, Connecticut was incorporated in 1871. Prior to that it was part of the town of Wethersfield, CT. The name Newington which means a new town in the meadow, was approved by the general assembly of the state in 1721 but until 1871 it did not govern itself.

What happened in 1830 that would eventually change that situation? The railroad came through and in 1870, Newington, Connecticut wanted to build a road so that they would have better access to the railroad. The town meeting denied the money and Newington, CT applied to the state general assembly and was approved for incorporation.

The town has a saying on its seal "Growth and Progress" but based on the time it took to govern itself it should be changed to growth and steady but slow progress.

In an area of just over 13 square miles there is quite a bit of valuable property in the town. The net grand list for the year 2006 shows the following values:

Real Estate $ 2,260,822,510
Personal Property $ 133,941,460
Motor Vehicle $ 196,387,748

Not bad for a small town.
